Decide what the summary is for

The best summary depends on your goal. A quick relevance check may need five bullets, while exam preparation needs definitions, examples and questions. Research may require exact claims and timestamps, and a tutorial may be clearer as a sequence of steps.

Write down the question you want the video to answer before generating anything. This prevents a generic recap from giving equal space to introductions, sponsorships and the material you actually need.

Start with the transcript, not a guessed description

Import the YouTube link and select the correct available language. Generate the transcript, then check whether the beginning, middle and end are present. Auto-captions can mishear names, technical vocabulary and numbers, especially when audio is noisy.

Keep timestamps attached to important sections. They let you return to demonstrations, evidence and qualifications without searching through the entire video again.

  1. 01

    Add the video

Paste the YouTube link and choose the language that matches the spoken content or captions.

  2. 02

    Check the transcript

Confirm that the full video was captured and review names, numbers and technical terms.

  3. 03

    Generate for your goal

Create a concise summary, outline, quiz, flashcards or another format suited to your purpose.

  4. 04

    Verify key moments

Use timestamps to revisit important claims, demonstrations and qualifications in the original video.

Separate the main argument from supporting detail

Identify the central question, the speaker's conclusion and the main reasons offered in support. Then capture examples, data or demonstrations that materially change how the conclusion should be understood.

Do not remove uncertainty. If the speaker describes a possibility, opinion or early result, the summary should not rewrite it as a proven fact. Preserve disagreement and limitations when they matter.

Verify before reusing the information

Return to the relevant timestamp before quoting, publishing or making a consequential decision. Check sources mentioned by the speaker when accuracy matters. A transcript can contain caption errors, and a fluent summary can still misrepresent a weak claim.

Respect the creator and applicable copyright rules. Summaries should help you understand and reference a video, not reproduce substantial protected material or present someone else's work as your own.

YouTube summary quality checklist

  • The summary answers the question you started with.
  • The speaker's main conclusion and reasoning are represented fairly.
  • Important examples, limitations and disagreements remain visible.
  • Names, numbers and technical terms were checked in the transcript.
  • High-stakes claims were verified against the video and original sources.

Common questions

Can AI summarise any YouTube video?

It depends on access to the video or captions, the available language and audio quality. Private, restricted or unavailable videos may not be processable.

Is a summary enough for studying?

A summary is useful for orientation and review, but deep learning usually requires examples, retrieval practice and returning to difficult parts of the source.

Can I cite an AI summary?

Cite the original video and its creator instead. Use the summary to navigate the content, then verify the exact claim and timestamp in the source.
